Eco-system was different 10 years ago. There was boom in IT industry and people were making mullahs out of their jobs.
There were regular pay hikes and layoff was the term that was never heard of. However things had changed and changed quite dramatically in last few years.
Big giants are cutting down on the numbers of their employees and IT sector is not the only one to suffer from these untimely, unannounced layoffs.
You can check yourself what these top brands are saying:
I know it’s terrible to lose out on your earning source, it has happened to me as well. I was working with India bulls, when suddenly it was announced one night that 200 people were asked to resign of their respective jobs.
I was devastated. At that time I was earning over Rs. 45,000/ and had a vehicle bought on monthly installments, it was a news that was hard to digest but was a reality none the less.
Now this happened few years ago, however, an article on How Artificial Intelligence is shrinking the human work force in many companies compelled me to reflect on this scenario again. In fact, I wrote something on it myself. You can click on the link, if you wish to read it.
If you and I are very honest with ourselves we will acknowledge that things are changing and by god they are changing very fast.
Technology is changing the way, we work, live, shop and even how we perceive our own lives.
Now, people are going hoo and haaa on how technology is replacing human skills on job but what they are forgetting is that it’s the mediocrity that is on line.
I have a Digital Marketing Firm in India so I will first start with my niche.
Have you ever set up a paid campaign on Facebook, No! Its dam simple, not only setting up FB campaign is simple but Google Ad word had also simplified their process considerably.
You have an AI bot working with you for both the platforms that enables you to set these campaigns.
In a year’s time, small business owners will be able to set these campaigns for themselves, so where will my business or my skills stand?
The answer is in the question, no doubt, that people will be able to set up their own campaign but a person with good skills and insights will away be able to guide them on
1) How to choose right audience
2) Which age group to target
3) What should be the budget of the campaign
4) How to create creative for the campaign
5) How to set up right audiences for that campaign
In simpler words, if I am exceptionally good with my skills, technology or AI will not be able to replace me rather, it will work with me to produce better results for the clients.
However, if my skills are only limited to setting up a campaign and I know nothing about working with analytics or how to find or target right audience then Good Luck!
To put in in simple words, Mediocrity is going to be washed away!
You need to be at the top of your game. No matter in which niche you are.
If you are a web designer, bring your A game to the table, keep yourself hooked to all the latest happenings around.
It won’t hurt your chances if along with designing you learn something like an Android development.
Try to brand yourself, it’s so important that you become a brand and it’s simple.
Whether you like it or not if you are sitting in the office from 9 Am to 6, you had already dedicated 9 hours of your day. Even if you just gossip around for those 9 hours, the day is still gone.
So the choice is yours.
No matter where you are working and what your job is, today you have unlimited resources to learn from.
You have no excuse to not to learn and upgrade yourself!
Companies lay off employees who they think they can replace with machines. Not the employees who can deliver excellent results while working with machines.
No matter how much you hate it or how much you condemn it, in the end we have to work with machines and we already are. AI is a reality, which is going to stay.
So why not embrace it, the more you learn, the more you upgrade yourself, the less are you chances to lose out on your job.
I will illustrate it by giving a simple scenario:
A is working in a call centre, he is very good at his job, works hard during shifts and party hard on weekends
B is also a good employee and is regular on his shifts, on weekends; he dedicates 3 hours to learn to code
Now, in case of layoff, who do you think will be in a better position?
This is what I am trying to stress upon in this article and I will end this by repeating myself again.
More than the machines its’ the Mediocrity that is a threat to your job
